RASTA is a Michigan-based public safety technology company developing AI-powered acoustic gunshot detection for schools, houses of worship, workplaces, and community spaces. Our Gunshot Detector is built to help identify acoustic gunshot sounds indoors and send faster, location-aware alerts when every second matters.
Our Story
RASTA began at Eastern Michigan University as a research-driven answer to a public-safety problem: if buildings can automatically detect smoke, why should detecting a potential gunshot depend only on someone calling for help?
Led by Dr. Tareq Khan and brought into commercialization with Mohamed Hagras, that research became a deployable safety product designed to save critical seconds, support responders, and protect lives.

Meet the Co-Founders
Dr. Tareq Khan
Co-Founder & CEO/CTO
Tareq Khan is the Co-Founder, CEO, and CTO of RASTA. He leads the company’s technology vision, research direction, product development, and engineering strategy.
Tareq Khan is an Associate Professor of Engineering at Eastern Michigan University with expertise in Internet of Things, machine learning, embedded systems, sensor systems, and image processing. His academic and technical work includes 65+ publications, multiple U.S. patents, and years of experience developing intelligent connected systems.
The foundation of RASTA’s Gunshot Detector came from his research into AI-powered indoor gunshot detection and emergency notification systems. His leadership keeps RASTA grounded in serious engineering, validated research, and real-world public safety impact.
Rafia Tahsin
Co-Founder & COO
Rafia Tahsin is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of RASTA. She leads customer service, sales and marketing, business operations, and customer relationship management.
With a master’s degree and a strong focus on business execution, Rafia works to connect RASTA’s technology with the needs of schools, organizations, and communities.
Rafia helps move RASTA from commercialization to growth by supporting customers, developing sales and marketing initiatives, coordinating day-to-day operations, and helping ensure that RASTA delivers reliable and professional experience throughout the customer journey.
